Spy x Family CODE: White is the debut film of the Spy x Family franchise. This extremely popular manga series has sold over 34 million copies (making it one of the best-selling manga titles of all time). After being adapted into a famous anime series, a theatrical release was inevitable!

For those unfamiliar with the setting, Spy x Family is set in a Cold War-era European world where the two countries of Westalis and Ostania are rivals.

Westalis agent codenamed Twilight is tasked with forming a family to infiltrate an elite school in order to reach a reclusive high-ranking politician. Twilight takes on the identity of psychiatrist Loid Forger, adopts Anya as her child, and enters into a marriage of convenience with Yor. Unknown to Loid, Yor is a skilled assassin and Anya is a psychic. Neither Yor nor Loid know each other's true identities. Anya knows her parents' true identities but keeps it a secret because she wants her family to stay together. Much of the series' humor revolves around each side's ignorance.

The film's official press release doesn't go into any details about the plot, and in keeping with Otaku News tradition, we won't be spoiling it for this review either.

The movie starts by setting the scene and explaining the Spy x Family scenario, so if you're new to the series, you'll understand what's going on. It feels a lot like a feature-length version of the anime with higher stakes right away, when due to a series of unlikely events (this is Spy x Family after all) world peace is in danger. The film works as a standalone story, so if you've never seen any Spy x Family before, you'll be able to follow everything, while if you're a geek, you'll know exactly what will happen.

While the familiar supporting cast gets a bit of screen time, this movie is very much about the family and their long adventure, so it focuses on Loid, Yor, and Anya .

There are some big budget scenes and lots of detailed sets. This feels a lot like a bigger budget version of the TV anime. It's exactly what you'd expect from the Spy x Family cinematic premiere. High stakes, high action and lots of fun.

There's a lot to like about the movie, but my only real criticism (if you can call it that) is that everyone's favorite scruffy Franky doesn't get enough screen time!

If you like Spy x Family then you will find this movie thoroughly enjoyable. If you want to explore the comedic world of espionage, the film is a great introduction.

Luckily if you haven't watched any Spy x Family yet, you can also watch Series 1 on Netflix or Series 1 and 2 on Crunchyroll.

Spy x Family CODE: White will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland from Friday 26 April 2024. To find a screening near you you can visit spyfamilyfilm.co.uk.

Also, for those who want to know, there's also a small scene after the end credits that's worth checking out.
