Major poll reveals Berserk's Griffith places among the worst villains of all time

in Anime

Popular website Ranker has revealed that Berserk's Griffith is considered by fans to be the greatest anime villain of all time, with data placing him among the best (worst) characters.

Updated on April 16, 2024, Ranker's “Greatest Anime Villains of All Time” ranked Berserk's Griffith/Femto a respectable 9th place. The poll was voted by 93.5 thousand voters, with 990.7 thousand votes shared among all ranked personalities. Griffith received over 10k votes, putting him ahead of Hunter x Hunter's Chrollo Lucifer but behind the ever-angry and genocidal Frieza of Dragon Ball Z. Ranker's specific algorithm is a secret, but it highlights the following four key factors in the results: number of up-votes, ratio of up-votes and down-votes, ranking frequency and ranking position, and procedures to combat biased voting. The full top 10 can be seen below.

Guts and Griffith's transition from brothers to sworn enemies in Berserk remains one of the most widely praised executions of the trope. Griffith's portrayal of a man who has it all – charisma, strength and leadership, inspiring loyalty – turns him into a monster who puts his dreams above everything else. other. This story culminates with The Eclipse. Killing most of his comrades, Griffith (now Femto) left irreparable scars on the surviving Casca and Guts – scars that remain in the latest chapters to come, with the new Berserk Chapter 376 finally has a release date after its October hiatus.

Berserk's Kentaro Miura was warned for going too far in his manga

Miura has previously commented on the events of The Eclipse, which included controversial depictions of graphic violence and sexual assault. In an interview years later, he revealed that he had been warned by his editors and superiors that he had gone too far. He said that, at a time when manga was still a rapidly growing form of expression, there were fewer social norms governing it. He admitted that he didn't know if he would do it the same way, but added that it was easy to lose perspective as a creator with frequent serialization.
