Ken Wakui's new Shonen Jump manga is the exact opposite of Tokyo Revengers

in Anime

Summary

Astro Royale focuses on building the future, not immersing itself in the past like Tokyo Revengers. Hibaru and his siblings prioritize moving forward after a tragic event. The manga explores themes of hopes and dreams, a far cry from the past heavy tone of Tokyo Revengers.

Astro Royalenew one Jump Shonen comic created by Avengers in Tokyo' mangaka Ken Wakui, seems to be at a distance from his predecessor. In his previous work, Wakui has examined how our experiences, regrets, and choices influence the present. Takemichi, the main character, is driven by the desire to create a better past to positively impact his future. Furthermore, most characters in manga are defined by their past, unable to let go.

In just two chapters, Astro Royale has proven that it won't follow the same path as Tokyo Revengers, as its story seems to focus on the future of its characters.

Hibaru, the main character, is a resilient and confident young man. people don't focus on what happened. His strong will is determined to make the future he desires a reality, never losing sight of where he wants to go next.

Your will shapes your future

Hibaru and his brothers don't let their past dictate their lives

One of the first details we learn about Hibaru is that he is the only biological child of Kongo, the first leader of the Yotsurugi clan. All of his siblings were later adopted by his father, who took them in and gave them a family. Despite this, Hibaru never focused on their origins, treating them as if they were his own siblings. Later in chapter #1, Hibaru refuses to let his father's death stop him from living his life. Sadness cannot control his actions.

However, the best example of Hibaru and his siblings focusing on their future comes from chapter 2 of the manga. After the meteor that gave them supernatural abilities destroyed their town, they wasted no time lamenting what they had lost. Shio, Kongo's first adopted son, uses this tragedy as an opportunity to take over the family. Hibaru, who was seriously injured in the incident, refused to sit still and chose to help the people of his town. Astro Royale's characters know that the past cannot be changedso instead they focus on what happens next.

Inability to let go

Key differences between Tokyo Revengers and Astro Royale

At its core, Avengers in Tokyo is a series about how the past is an integral part of one's identity. Most of the characters in the story have had to go through harsh experiences, getting stuck in the past and letting it dictate their lives. Mikey, for example, went down a dark path due to the tragic deaths of his brother and sister, only being able to heal his wounds thanks to Takemichi's friendship. The manga aims to revolve around the characters' experiences, as Wakui seems to want to explore that part of the human experience.

In Astro Royale, The mangaka has turned a new leaf, exploring themes of hopes, dreams and aspirations. The characters in his new manga will not be defined by their past but instead by what happens in the present and how it will shape their future. While it's almost impossible for the past to play a role in Hibaru's story, it likely won't be the deciding factor in what happens next. Past events can serve as a means for readers to better understand certain characters.

As of chapter #2 of the manga, It seems like Astro Royale won't follow the same philosophy as Wakui's previous manga. The will to build a new future and make wishes come true will be at the heart of Hibaru's adventure. Astro Royale will allow followers of Wakui's work to explore new themes and learn new lessons alongside a new cast of lovable characters.
