Another Dragon Ball character stole Goku's origin story

in Anime

Summary

Piccolo and Kami share a similar origin story to Goku, as they were sent into space as Nameless Namekians to save them. The unnamed Namekian's father, Katas, placed him in a spaceship to escape the climate crisis in Namek, leading him to Earth. Despite their shared origins, the story never draws a comparison between Goku and Piccolo/Kami, causing fans to notice the similarities.

Fan Dragon ball is very familiar with Goku's origins, having been taken from Planet Vegeta as a child in a spaceship shortly before the planet was destroyed by Frieza. However, there is another main Dragon Ball character, or perhaps more accurately a pair of characters, whose origins are surprisingly similar.

Piccolo and Kami are Namekians, so they originate from the planet Namek, but they have lived most of their lives on Earth. That's because Piccolo and Kami are actually two halves of the same being, and Piccolo and Kami eventually merge back into one over the course of the series.

However, it is their ancestor, known only as the nameless Namekian, who explains exactly how these two managed to live their lives on Earth and his origins a little too closely. With Goku's origins, it's hard to feel comfortable.

Piccolo and Kami's original forms have the same origin as Goku

The nameless Namekian was the son of a Namekian named Katas, passed down by the Namekian Grand Elder, Guru. Guru said that Katas was a genius and also a good father to his young son. It is revealed that approximately 500 years before the main events of Dragon Ball Z, the planet Namek experienced a sudden climate crisis that threatened to kill all Namekians on the planet. Desperate to save his son, Katas placed the unnamed Namekian in a spaceship, which eventually landed on Earth. Guru is the only survivor of this crisis, and as such, is the only one who knows the Nameless Namekian is out there.

From there, the nameless Namekian became Earth's protector and split into his good half, Kami, and his evil half, King Piccolo, who would give birth to what Piccolo fans know and love today. As divided beings, Kami and Piccolo forget their true origins and are unaware that there may still be other Namekians somewhere in the universe.

Although the circumstances of the planet's destruction are different, as Planet Vegeta was intentionally destroyed and the events took place hundreds of years apart, this is extremely close to Goku's origin story. Of course, sending babies to random planets is a long-standing Saiyan trait, so Bardock doing this isn't as strange as it was for Katas. The two stumble upon Earth, where Kami will continue creating the Dragon Balls.

Unfortunately, the story never actually draws any comparisons between Goku and Kami/Piccolo, despite this shared origin, suggesting it's more of a coincidence than some kind of factor. The topic has some intention. The unnamed Namekian's origins are much more obscure than Goku's, so many fans may have never noticed the similarities between Piccolo and Goku's stories. What's interesting is that two of Earth's greatest defenders just happened to be here after being sent into space, and one wonders if Piccolo and Goku themselves ever really noticed What do they have in common?
